The ideas of Metabolism as implemented in modern culture were philosophical as well as architectural, and ostensibly based on Buddhist notions ofimpermanence and change.

Metabolism (from Greekμεταβολή "metabolē", "change" or Greekμεταβολισμός metabolismos, "outthrow") is the set of life-sustainingchemical transformations within the cells of living organisms. These enzyme-catalyzed reactions allow organisms to grow and reproduce, maintain their structures, and respond to their environments.
